As a heating engineer, each day brings a unique set of challenges and tasks. Let me take you through a snapshot of what a typical day might look like:
Job 1: Investigating an Oil Smell
The first call of the day was from a concerned customer in Goldsborough reporting a strong oil smell. Upon arrival, I was unable to detect the smell of oil so I carefully checked the boiler and oil supply pipework for any signs of oil leaks, using blue paper towels – which are great for detecting tiny leaks that may not be visible to the naked eye, I visually inspected the boiler and ensured the burner was running correctly and safely. With no apparent faults found I was able to reassure the customer there was no oil leak and gave advice of what to do incase of future issues.
Job 2: Gas Fire Service
Next on the agenda was a routine gas fire service in Northallerton. Following safety protocols, I tested the unit for gas leaks, carried out a visual inspection and cleaned the appliance as required and checked the flame burning pattern / colour to ensure the combustion gases were safe and that tested to make sure the flue was working correctly. I made sure that the “coals” were in good condition and properly arranged in the fire – which is essential to the safe operation of the fire. I conducted a gas tightness test to pressure test the gas pipework. Thankfully, everything checked out fine, and there were no faults detected. So I issued a Gas Safety Certificate to confirm the details of the service.
Job 3: Oil Boiler Service
Moving on to an oil boiler service in Great Langton, I diligently went through the necessary steps to ensure the boiler was operating at its best. I use a flue gas analyser to measure the combustion readings and make any adjustments required to ensure that the boiler is operating correctly and safely This includes visual inspections and testing of the boiler parts and flue, cleaning relevant parts, replacing the nozzle, and changing two hoses to maintain optimal functionality. Another happy customer of the morning!
Job 4: Another Oil Boiler Service
Quick lunch break then back to work in Thornton Le Moor! Another oil boiler service was on the agenda, but this time, things didn’t go as smoothly. Despite cleaning and servicing the boiler, changing the hose, and replacing the nozzle, I found the boiler was not burning as it should and the carbon monoxide (CO) levels detected by my flue gas analyser were too high. Carbon monoxide is present when any fossil fuel is burned (gas, oil, lpg or even your summer BBQ!) It is an invisible gas that has no taste or smell so can only be detected by specialist equipment. The flue was working well to take the fumes outside so there was no immediate risk to the occupier, but the boiler did need to be repaired. This boiler was still under manufacturers warranty so a call to Worcester Bosch was made to book a warranty call and I gave advice to the customer and left a CO alarm next to the boiler for added peace of mind for the customer. I always recommend that everyone has a CO alarm close to any gas oil or lpg appliance to alert them to any risk straight away. If you have a CO alarm and it goes off you should immediately turn off the appliance, open the windows and call in an expert to repair your appliance.
Job 5: Boiler and Unvented Cylinder Servicing
Wrapping up the day with a dual task in Catterick Garrison, I serviced both a boiler and an unvented cylinder during the same visit. While testing the unvented cylinder, I found the pressure vessel was blown, which requires replacing because this is an important safety device for pressurised hot water systems. I noted it down in my report so the office team can let the customer know the price for the repair and order in the correct part for a return visit. During the boiler service I noticed the pressure in the heating system was low, so I topped up the pressure ensuring it was within the recommended range for optimal performance. I carried out a visual inspection of the boiler and flue, tested the functionality of the boiler and associated controls and tested all the safety devices in the boiler, they were all working correctly and my flue gas analyser confirmed the combustion readings were correct and the boiler was operating safely, so I issued a Gas Safety Certificate to confirm the details of the service. I gave the customer advice regarding the low pressure, recommending they check it again in a few days as repeated pressure loss on the boiler may indicate a leak on the heating system.
Each job presents its own set of intricacies, from routine maintenance to troubleshooting unexpected issues. As a heating engineer, adaptability and expertise are essential traits to navigate through the varied demands of the job, ensuring the comfort and safety of our customers’ homes.
